Promises - A Novel
“I promise you, Mottel, I’ll do my part. I promise you that I’ll do all I can to ensure that the children grow up to be chassidim, yirei Shamayim, and lamdanim…”
Despite the harsh winds of the Haskalah blowing in the little town of Krāslava, Latvia, in 1925, Bunia Diamant knows that she wants to build a Torah home, and nothing her friends say can sway her. Hashem answers her tefillos with a beautiful chassidishe family, and she couldn’t be happier. But then war breaks out, and life takes a drastic change for the worse. Can Bunia continue to follow her dreams even when everything goes horribly wrong?
In this fascinating true story, Bunia and her family endure icy weather, hunger, and loss, but despite it all, they never lose sight of what’s most important. From her childhood home in Latvia to shelichus in Finland, from exile in Siberia to the wilds of Uzbekistan, you won’t be able to put down this book until you turn the last page. And that’s a promise.
