An Appreciation of the Gaon and Tzaddik Rav Yaakov Yisroel Kanievski
Reb Yaakov Yisroel Kanievski, zt"l, affectionately known 'the world over as "the Steipler", was already recognized by the gedolei Yisrael of the previous generation for his greatness in Torah and mussar. Even as a young man in pre-war Europe, the Steipler's genius had spread throughout the Torah world. As a hand-picked brother-in-law of the gadol bador, the Chazon Ish, the Steipler never looked for honor, but always deferred to others. Nonetheless, for nearly half a century, people from all over the world streamed to his humble apartment in Bnei Brak, seeking guidance, comfort, advice and his blessing. The Steipler's unswerving scrupulousness in all areas of Torah and halacha was unparalleled, even under the most trying circumstances. Whether confined to a prison or the Russian Army, his strict observance of Torah and mitzvos was never compromised. His life was filled with many hardships, especially in his younger years, yet his steadfastness in doing the will of Hashem never wavered. The Steipler provided us with a living example of what it means to be a complete eved Hashem and how one can overcome all obstacles to attain one's goals. While no work can do justice to the Steipler's true gadlus, this book captures some of this greatness of spirit and humanity that he personified.
